Moorestown Community Band History

Picture
Bob McCoy
Robert (Bob) McCoy founded the Moorestown Community Band in 1991 as part of the Moorestown Township School District's Adult Night School program. Originally known as “Bob’s BAND-its,” the group began with just 12 musicians—many of whom had not played their instruments since their high school days. Several of the original members were former students from Mr. McCoy’s 37-year tenure as an instrumental music teacher at Moorestown Middle School. He retired from teaching in 1986.
In January 2013, Maestro McCoy passed the baton to Assistant Conductor L. Bruce Smith. Bob continued playing with the band as a clarinetist until December 2016. Under Bruce’s leadership, the band grew to nearly 60 members and expanded to include a Jazz Band component, which remained active until 2023. He also significantly increased the band's presence in the local community by adding performances throughout Burlington County, including seasonal concerts in autumn, winter, and spring. These included the annual Winter and Spring Concerts held at the band’s rehearsal home, William Allen Middle School.
In June 2024, L. Bruce Smith passed the baton to Michelle Gergich, who serves as the current Music Director/ Conductor.
