Robert (Bob) McCoy founded the Moorestown Community Band, originally known as "Bob's Bandits." The Band was started as part of The Moorestown Township School District's Adult Night School in 1991. Bob McCoy previously taught instrumental music in The Moorestown Middle School for 37 years, retiring in 1986. The original concert band had 12 musicians, many of whom had not played instruments since their high school playing days. Many musicians in the band in the early days were Bob's former middle school students.
In January 2013, Maestro McCoy passed his baton to L. Bruce Smith, Assistant Conductor, and Bob McCoy remained in the band as a clarinetist until December 2016. In June 2024, L. Bruce Smith passed the baton to Michelle Gergich, the current Music Director. L. Bruce Smith grew the band to almost 60 players and added a Jazz Band component to the band until 2023. He also increased the Band's presence in the local community, adding several additional concerts at venues around the county in the autumn, winter and springtime, including the Winter and Spring Concerts at our rehearsal home, William Allen Middle School. |
